Therapy Dog Who Helped Nurses Through Pandemic Receives Honorary ‘Dogtorate’ From University

The era of the COVID-19 pandemic brought unparalleled challenges to all, yet its weight was particularly burdensome for indispensable frontline workers such as doctors and nurses.

Amidst these trying times, a beacon of hope emerged within the walls of a hospital, where an extraordinary team member stood ready to uplift spirits. And now, in a heartwarming turn of events, she has been bestowed with a remarkable accolade, symbolizing her exceptional contributions.

Dr. Caroline Benzel, who owns a 5-year-old Rottweiler named Loki, has been accompanied by her loyal companion throughout her years at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Their journey began when Dr. Caroline Benzel got Loki in the same week she was accepted into medical school. Recognizing the potential in Loki, she initiated service dog level training, with the intention of transforming her into a therapy dog for the hospital.

Reflecting on this journey, Dr. Caroline Benzel shared her experience with KENS 5, stating, “The week that I had gotten her was the same week that I was accepted to medical school, so I started putting her through service dog level training, but I knew that I was going to be trying to make her a therapy dog for the hospital.”

Loki underwent specialized training to provide comfort to patients at the hospital, ultimately becoming an indispensable therapy dog. The owner attests that Loki was proficient in navigating all the medical equipment at the hospital, enabling her to assist in various departments, including trauma centers.

During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Loki assumed an even more significant role. Witnessing the immense pressure faced by healthcare professionals during those challenging times, Benzel and Loki decided to give back in an exceptional manner.

In an effort to uplift spirits, Loki and Benzel assembled and distributed self-care packages to nurses at the University of Maryland Medical Center. These packages contained essentials such as moisturizers, lip balm, and granola bars.

Benzel mentioned to People in 2021 that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can have a harsh impact on the skin. He expressed gratitude for the care packages that were given to the essential workers, emphasizing their importance.

Benzel also shared that it was heartwarming to witness the essential workers sitting on the floor, joyfully comparing the contents of their care packages and exchanging different items. This simple act brought brightness to their day.

To add to the uplifting atmosphere, Loki, dressed in a lab coat, accompanied Benzel during the delivery of the packages. This unexpected sight surely brought smiles and lifted spirits.

Benzel highlighted that despite the common perception of Rottweilers being intimidating, Loki’s presence demonstrated that kindness and making a difference can come from anyone, regardless of their appearance.

The duo reportedly managed to gather more than $100,000 to assemble care packages during the pandemic. As per KENS 5, Loki and Benzel also conducted virtual therapy sessions for the university’s healthcare staff amid the pandemic.

Benzel expressed, “The presence of a therapy dog, especially during challenging times, truly has a significant impact on individuals.” The growth of the program itself demonstrates this impact.”

Recently, the university honored Loki for her unwavering commitment by granting her an honorary “dogtorate” degree, a gesture that warmed the hearts of many.

This week, a unique ceremony unfolded at the University of Maryland-Baltimore, celebrating the invaluable contributions of therapy dogs to the university community. Among the esteemed honorees was Loki, who stood proudly beside Dr. Benzel as she received her honorary degree.

Loki, lauded for her invaluable assistance to frontline healthcare workers, was honored with the prestigious title of “Doctor of Medicine.” Alongside her, two other esteemed canines were recognized for their exceptional contributions: Kylo Red received the distinguished designation of “Doctor of Pharmacy,” while Kiera was bestowed with the title of “Juris Dogtor.”

The ceremony served as a beacon to spotlight the remarkable service and therapy dogs and their dedicated handlers, underscoring their significance by bestowing well-deserved accolades upon these extraordinary companions.

Loki’s presence brought immense joy to individuals during the pandemic, and as a therapy dog, he continues to make a positive impact on others – truly deserving of his “dogtorate”! Congratulations to Loki on this well-deserved recognition! 🎓❤️.
