Couple Gets Married At Vet Hospital So Beloved Dog Can Be Part Of The Wedding
In the visions of countless soon-to-be-wedded couples, a veterinarian’s office rarely serves as the ideal backdrop for their special day. Nevertheless, for one pair, this unconventional locale became the scene of their nuptials, solely to ensure the presence of their cherished canine companion.
Deeply devoted to her furry friend Bear, Cat Kukla harbored a long-held aspiration for him to play a role in her wedding festivities. Thus, despite the atypical venue, Cat’s determination to incorporate Bear into her big day remained unwavering.
“During my childhood, I never quite fit into the stereotypical ‘girly’ mold, never fantasizing about weddings like many of my peers. However, there was one cherished dream I held close: having Bear by my side in a little red wagon at my wedding,” Cat shared with The Dodo.
In 2011, Cat crossed paths with Jimmy, her future husband, and Bear continued to hold a significant place in both their hearts. As they geared up to exchange vows, they were determined to honor Cat’s enduring wish and include Bear in their special day.
Bear, although aging gracefully, has encountered health challenges as of late, being a 17-year-old dog. Recently, he was hospitalized due to kidney disease, casting a shadow over the couple’s impending wedding.
As the wedding day approached, it appeared doubtful that Bear would be able to join the celebration. However, the couple decided to make a touching adjustment to their plans, ensuring Bear’s presence at their special day.
“I suggested to Jimmy that perhaps we should have our wedding at the vet’s to ensure Bear could be there with us,” Cat shared with The Dodo. “His immediate response was, ‘I would marry you any day, any time.'”
Ultimately, the couple exchanged their vows at the VCA Veterinary Emergency Service & Veterinary Specialty Center, where Bear was receiving care. According to a statement from the veterinary office, they held the ceremony in a waiting area with their loved ones in attendance.
Images shared by the veterinary clinic offer a tender glimpse into the heartwarming ceremony: Bear, still a tad drowsy from his medical regimen, reclines in a crimson wagon, just as Cat had always imagined. Emblazoned on the wagon’s rear is the poignant inscription “I loved her first.”
Additionally captured in the snapshots is Cat’s tattoo paying homage to Bear, bearing the words “You’ll be with me wherever I go” alongside a paw print—a vow realized on her wedding day.
Thankfully, Bear was discharged from the veterinary clinic two days post-ceremony. The clinic conveyed that Bear was now “relishing all the affection and cuddles from his cherished (newlywed) companions” in the comfort of his home.
The couple’s perseverance allowed them to proceed as planned with their wedding ceremony, where Bear, alongside their other cherished dogs, stood faithfully by their side.
In an update to The Dodo, the couple revealed Bear’s health has faced further challenges, yet they remain steadfast in their efforts to restore his well-being. Remarkably, despite his declining health, Bear appeared to brighten up on the day of their wedding.
“After the ceremony, Bear surprised everyone by rising to his feet and venturing outdoors, a feat he hadn’t attempted in days. He embarked on quite a stroll!”
The significance of dogs in our lives cannot be overstated, and it’s heartwarming to see how many couples desire their faithful companions to be present on their special day. We’re overjoyed that this couple was able to exchange vows with Bear, their cherished companion, by their side ❤️”
