Last Dog Inside Shelter Finally Gets Adopted , Smiles When He Realizes He Has A Home

It’s often said that patience brings its rewards, a truth exemplified by none other than Al Capone.

In the heart of Michigan, at the Ionia County Animal Shelter, a 7-year-old Staffordshire terrier mix has shown remarkable patience, awaiting the day a loving family will claim him permanently. Yet, despite his hopeful demeanor, no connection has endured.

Witnessing his shelter companions find their forever homes, the senior dog remains steadfast, watching as each departure leaves him as the solitary figure within the shelter walls.

Carly Quinn, the director of the Ionia County Animal Shelter, shared with The Dodo, “For quite some time, Capone was the sole occupant of our shelter. Apart from Capone, who exuded gentleness, calmness, and kindness, our kennels remained empty.”

Initially adopted upon arrival in 2017, Capone found himself back at the shelter a year later due to a conflict with another dog in his adoptive home.

Facing homelessness for the second time, Capone became despondent, losing his appetite and refusing to eat.

Quinn noted, “He visibly lost weight as his appetite waned. Encouraging him to eat became a daily challenge, requiring the use of treats and enticing wet meals.”

Quinn interpreted Capone’s hunger strike as a forewarning of deeper issues ahead.

“He seemed despondent,” Quinn elaborated, “and anyone familiar with significant loss understands how eating habits can become secondary.”

However, Capone’s distress transcended mere sorrow; he harbored a fear of abandonment.

“The Capone of 2017 and the Capone of 2018 were starkly different creatures,” Quinn reflected. “Following his second surrender, he appeared to selectively bond, as if grappling with feelings of betrayal.” He formed a profound connection with shelter staff, seeking solace in their presence.

Quinn remarked, “He’s like a velcro dog.” “Always sticking close to you, seeking constant affection.”

Due to the shelter staff’s belief that Capone would flourish in a pet-free household, locating the ideal setting for the senior dog became a challenge. They regularly posted his picture on social media platforms, ensuring the entire community was informed of his availability and keenness to find his forever home.

And that’s precisely what occurred.

Quinn was astounded when she stumbled upon a post on the shelter’s Facebook page initiated by a couple inquiring about Capone. “They were captivated by his images and his narrative,” Quinn recounted. “They had even gone to the extent of crafting a personalized name tag for him, adorned with his name and their contact details, by the time they arrived at our shelter later that day.”

Meanwhile, Capone had been apprehensive about letting anyone into his heart again, having experienced surrender twice before.

Knowing Capone’s discerning nature, Quinn approached his kennel with bated breath. “My team and I were hoping against hope that Capone would take to them,” Quinn revealed. “As I entered the lobby with Capone, he paused and fixed his gaze on Jon and Ashlee. They both knelt down, and Capone dashed straight into their embrace.”

“It was a genuinely heartwarming moment,” she added.

The most solitary canine in the shelter had at last discovered his eternal abode, prompting tears among the staff witnessing the heartwarming conclusion to Capone’s journey.

Upon arriving at their home, Capone’s new guardians captured a snapshot of the dog as he familiarized himself with his new surroundings, and his expression conveyed volumes:
