Recently, such a heroic act unfolded when a railway station staff member rescued a stranded dog from peril on the train tracks just as a train was fast approaching.
The account of this rescue was shared by TikTok user @getinthebarth, who posted a video capturing the poignant moment at Leagrave railway station. The footage depicted the dog stranded on the tracks, seemingly unaware of the impending danger as a train neared. Despite the presence of onlookers, none could offer assistance to the distressed canine.
Fortunately, swift action from one individual ensured the dog’s safety in the nick of time.
Newsweek reported that the rescuer was identified as 56-year-old Paul Hawthorn from Luton, southeast England. As a dedicated railway worker, Hawthorn fearlessly intervened to avert a potential tragedy, emerging as the unsung hero of the day.
In the midst of the booking hall hustle, he found himself alerted to the presence of a Staffordshire bull terrier on the tracks.
“I found myself pondering the appropriate course of action,” he recounted to Newsweek, “when instinct took over. I promptly contacted the signalman to warn of the situation, prompting trains to slow down in preparation for potential halts.”
Thankfully, a solution materialized swiftly: enticing the dog with food. He promptly sought out the station’s coffee vendor, procuring a handful of croissants to lure the dog towards the platform’s edge, facilitating its rescue.
The TikTok user hinted at the dog being abandoned, suggesting that numerous pet owners abandon their animals at railway stations. However, Newsweek reported that the dog had simply wandered away from home when a garage door was accidentally left open.
Describing it as a “lovely dog,” Hawthorn took care of it in the station’s mess room until its owners could be located and reunited.
The video has garnered over 5.6 million views on TikTok, with Hawthorn receiving praise for his courageous actions.
