Virginia Tech Honors Their Loyal Therapy Dog With Honorary Doctorate Degree
‘Tis the season when we rejoice in the achievements of our graduating students, as they receive their well-deserved diplomas. Despite the majority of this year’s graduation ceremonies being either canceled or transitioned to virtual platforms, there was one exceptional instance where a university chose to confer an honorary degree upon a remarkable member of its faculty.
Allow me to introduce Moose, an 8-year-old golden retriever who serves as a devoted therapy dog at Virginia Tech’s esteemed Cook Counseling Center.
Since joining the team in 2014, Moose has seamlessly integrated into the university community, earning admiration and affection from all who encounter him.
Recognized as an official therapy animal and an advocate for mental health awareness, Moose has actively participated in an impressive 7,500 counseling sessions and over 500 outreach events, making an indelible impact on the lives of countless individuals.
Moose is adored by everyone, reciprocating their affection without discrimination or judgment.
Trent Davis, the counselor and coordinator of Virginia Tech’s Animal Assisted Therapy at Cook Counseling Center, expressed Moose’s unconditional love, stating, ‘Moose cherishes you whether you excel academically or struggle, whether you’ve faced illness or are a celebrated athlete.’
Talya George, the associate director of VVMA, acknowledged Moose’s daily contribution of stress relief and emotional support to his community, deeming him a genuine animal hero.
Moose faced significant hurdles over the past year. In February, he received the daunting diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Fortunately, he found solace in expert care at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Undergoing rigorous radiation and chemotherapy treatments, he was tenderly tended to by a dedicated Virginia Tech veterinary student.
His journey of healing persists, yet he strides with resilience. And amidst his journey, a glimmer of hope emerged, casting a beam of light upon his path.
He received an honorary doctorate from the university!
Introducing the esteemed “Doctor Moose”! Despite the cancellation of graduation ceremonies, the university went above and beyond, hosting a bespoke ceremony just for Moose. Clad in a traditional cap and gown, he was presented with his very own diploma, marking his exceptional achievements.
Congratulations, Moose! You deserve it!
Therapy canines contribute immensely to the well-being of individuals, and witnessing a university acknowledge one of these remarkable dogs with such a prestigious accolade is truly uplifting. Let’s spread the warmth of this touching narrative!
